The Eye of Osiris
This is an ancient Egyptian symbol commonly known as the Eye of Horus or the Eye of Osiris. It has a whole mythical history which we can talk about some other time.
The important thing is that the Maltese have taken this symbol and changed it a bit, and put it on many of their ships for good luck. Here is what the Maltese Eye of Osiris or Eye of Horus looks like Maltese-style. This is, in fact, the logo for a web site called Made in Malta Products.com.
Many people--not just in Malta--wear this symbol as a charm on a chain or as a ring or as a pair of earrings. The photo at the top of the page is actually a scan of one of my Eye-of-Horus earrings.
Here is another, very beautiful rendition of the Maltese Eye of Osiris. (Click on the image and see it in large-size.) It's from a web site called Collectibles--Malta Expo.com.
