One-Line Bio:
I am a writer, mother of two daughters and soon-to-be expat.
Biography:
At the age of 55, I am planning to move to Malta, inshallah (which means G-d Willing). There are three reasons:
1. I've been in a relationship with a man from Europe, and this will be a good place for us to be together after a very good, very long-distance relationship.
2. I have the Mediterranean in my blood, and have always wanted to be in a warm, beautiful place where it's OK to take naps.
3. I cannot survive financially in America anymore. My health insurance is now $900/month--as much as my rent. Even with the terrible dollar, as of this writing, I should be better off in Malta.
This is going to be a very hard journey for me and my two daughters and my brother--who are staying behind in the States. I dedicate this web site/blog to them for understanding that I have to try this, and to my European man for trying to make it happen.
Interests:
Moving to Malta, ancient Egypt, Persian cats, my two daughters, lots of chocolate, funny movies, musicals, horseback riding, writing, collecting pottery...

This blog is cool. Can you give us an idea of prices for property e.g. buying a 4 bed house near the beach? We're planning a trip to Malta over Christmas, staying in Rabat, hope the island's as good as you say it is!

Hello Martin, Thanks for your kind comment. Buying property here is very expensive--to me, anyway. I suggest you check out some of the realty places you may see listed on this blog or elsewhere. I don't look much at the prices, but I would say the range is between $400,000 up to $1,000,000.

Hey there, I've been living in Malta for 23 years now and I never noticed the small nice things that you wrote about. Thinking about it, Malta really is unique in many ways.
PS: I really like the way you write.

hi there, came across your blog accidentally and have spent all of yesterday reading it!!!
I've been living in malta since 1993, left to study abroad in 2001 and just came back recently. Trust me this whole issue of getting a work permit for third country nationals is driving me nuts too! They make residency a big issue for me as well even tho my family has been here the whole time for the last 16 yrs! so I kinda know what you're going through.
Really like your blog though! Especially the nicer parts about malta which I suppose I have been taking for granted! keep posting! =)
btw might be able to help a bit with Carl's question on the student part. since I am a vet myself and also back in post-secondary most of classmates then are now doctors here. You can forward him my email address if you want.

Hi Teresa--Thanks for your comment and advice. I will have to reapply for my permit again in Sept to continue teaching for another six months. You spend your first month's salary here on paying fee for permits, don't you? Where are you practicing as a vet? I hope you're in Sliema, because I need a vet for my kitty---Ilene
